The Causes of Halitosis

The most convenient way in annihilating bad breath is with the use of mouth fresheners. The effects are instant and can easily be noticed not just by yourself but the people you are conversing with. But the use of such products does not provide a real solution especially to the one suffering from this condition. The more common causes of halitosis are poor oral hygiene. You cannot always brush your teeth after eating an exotic dish filled with spices in a posh restaurant. Flossing in this scenario is difficult to do as well.
Halitosis usually has simple causes that are manageable to control. Some may have this condition simply by being lazy in brushing and flossing one’s teeth before sleeping. One who is not fond of drinking water lacks the necessary hydration needed by the mouth tissues. Also, water cleanses our mouth so drinking lots of it can flush food particles stuck in between teeth. Irregular visits to your dentist can definitely cause halitosis. Remember that the mouth is a good feeding ground for bacteria. They usually feed on food particles stuck in your teeth. For more serious conditions, these bacteria find refuge inside the gums. So if you noticed people with gum problems usually exhibit bad breath. There are good bacteria inside the mouth so the goal is to only get rid of the bad ones. This can be achieved by maintaining good oral hygiene and regular dental examinations.
Metabolic Causes of Halitosis
One condition that may have been overlooked is diabetes. Studies show that most diabetic cases are undetectable in its early stages. A number of the population may not be aware that they already have diabetes. The build up of ketones in the blood is prevalent in people with diabetes. Ketones are extremely odorous chemicals that are formed when the body burns fat instead of carbohydrate for energy. Ketones are eliminated from blood through urine, in perspiration and exhaled breath. If one has this condition, a dentist cannot resolve this concern anymore. He or she may have to refer you to a physician who has more expertise with diabetes. It is highly possible that diabetes and bacterial infections are interrelated since people with high blood sugar are predisposed immune deficiencies.
A sudden change in one’s diet can cause bad breath as well. Ketosis is caused by fasting also diet that are mostly into high protein and excluding carbohydrates. People who want to lose weight fast or want to increase their musculatures tend to use fat for energy. In this case ketones that are smelly build up in the blood. They usually find their way to the lungs as manifested in exhaled breath. That is why it is very important to consult an expert who can tailor fit a special diet so as to avoid this condition.
